What about left handed playing?

If you’re left-handed, you can get a guitar made especially for lefties. However, if you’ve never played guitar before, I think you’re best off trying a standard right-handed instrument. They’re much easier to find and often cheaper.

Since you don’t have any prior experience, learning guitar will feel totally new whether you start left-handed or right-handed, so you might as well go right-handed. Of course, there are famous left-handed guitarists like Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, and Paul McCartney of the freakin’ Beatles—and I’m DEFINITELY not saying they were wrong to start as lefties.

Just know that you don’t necessarily have to play left-handed just because you’re generally left-hand dominant. In fact, I do everything left-handed except play guitar, and I get by just fine.

If you’re left-handed, I think the best thing to do is go to a music store and try both. See if one naturally feels easier than the other, and make your decision from there.

And Beginner to Kickass works just as well for both right-handers and left-handers, because I say “rhythm hand and fretting hand” instead of “right hand and left hand.”
